Summary

The Outbound Inspector is responsible for ensuring that all completed railcars meet the stringent standards set by the Association of American Railroads (AAR), as well as the requirements of the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), the Department of Transportation (DOT), and customer specifications. This role involves conducting thorough inspections to assess railcars for accuracy and compliance with established guidelines. The primary goal is to guarantee that every outbound railcar fully conforms to all applicable regulations and quality assurance protocols.

 

The Outbound Inspector verifies that all necessary requirements are satisfied by comparing the work performed against the Work Instruction criteria and documenting findings. The inspector maintains and updates manuals, such as Standard Repair Manuals and AAR and FRA Regulations, and conducts continuous reviews of these manuals to stay informed about necessary repairs and compliance standards.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform the following essential duties satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Inspects rail cars to ensure all FRA, DOT, AAR, and Customer requirements are satisfied
  • Compares the work performed to the Work Instructions and reports findings on applicable forms
  • Reviews Work Instruction criteria and all applicable forms for accuracy and completeness
  • Reviews manuals on a continuing basis to maintain complete knowledge of necessary repairs
  • Maintains records of cars shipped
  • Performs a variety of duties as assigned such as analyzing drawings, performing inspections, assuring proper stenciling of cars, and other special duties

Qualifications

The following generally describes requirements to successfully perform the assigned duties.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • 2+ years of Railcar inspection experience
  • VT Level II certification or the ability to achieve via inhouse training
  • Knowledge of using a variety of tools and gauging devices
  • Knowledge of freight and tank car repair methods, material requirements, and inspection
  • Knowledge of MSRP M-1002 M-1003 and Field manual or the AAR interchange rules
  • Knowledge of nondestructive testing procedures and requirements
  • Ability to interpret drawings, procedure manuals, and have proven mechanical aptitude
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Ability to keep accurate records in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to accurately demonstrate visual inspection
  • Ability to follow written procedures
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse conditions for up to 90% of each work day

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalency test
  • Welding and NDT experience is a plus

  • Additional PPE may be required as determined by the environment.
  • This position requires some work to be performed at heights above four feet or within confined spaces.
