Summary

The Lead Asset Manager plays a critical role in overseeing the maintenance and management of Greenbrier’s owned and/or managed railcar assets. This position ensures mechanical integrity, cost-effective maintenance practices, and compliance with AAR/FRA regulations and Greenbrier standards. The Lead Asset Manager will lead complex projects, train and mentor team members, and serve as a subject matter expert supporting both internal stakeholders and external partners. This role requires strategic judgment, technical expertise, and exceptional coordination across vendors, customers, repair shops, and internal teams to ensure asset performance and lifecycle efficiency.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Asset Oversight & Maintenance Execution

  • Lead the management of railcar assets to ensure optimal performance, regulatory compliance, and maintenance integrity.
  • Conduct thorough analysis of customer-assigned fleets, identifying anomalies and trends in maintenance spend.
  • Review, audit, and approve repair estimates and invoices from shops and mobile service providers, ensuring accuracy, cost-efficiency, and compliance with AAR and Greenbrier standards.
  • Coordinate bad order and program cars through the repair process, expediting work and leveraging Greenbrier systems.
  • Lead the scrapping process for end-of-life assets in accordance with regulations.
  • Utilize fleet analytics dashboards to assess program performance, identify cost drivers, and suggest corrective actions that optimize maintenance strategy and improve fleet availability.

Program Management

  • Initiate and manage program maintenance, including creation of Scope of Work (SOW), solicitation of shop bids, and coordination of customer approvals.
  • Lead mechanical project kickoff meetings with repair shops, ensuring clear alignment on requirements and expectations.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between Greenbrier, shop personnel, and vendors for repair activity and estimates.

Communication & Escalation

  • Act as the central point of contact for asset condition updates, escalating issues as necessary and ensuring alignment with asset owners.
  • Maintain strong relationships with internal GBX teams.
  • Represent Asset Management in meetings, conference calls, and industry forums.

Training & Process Improvement

  • Onboard and train new Asset Managers, ensuring mastery of SOPs, systems, and workflows.
  • Support the continuous improvement and maintenance of SOPs, procedures, and maintenance documentation.
  • Support Asset Managers and Senior Asset Managers with tasks, project coordination, and process alignment.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for cross-functional projects and departmental inquiries.

Data, Reporting & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate mechanical reporting (events, programs, delivery schedules, etc.) within Greenbrier’s maintenance system.
  • Monitor and implement industry-required changes and best practices across the team.
  • Conduct railcar inspections, as needed, to ensure physical and mechanical compliance

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent relevant work experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of progressive rail industry experience required, with a focus on railcar maintenance, asset management, or repair operations.
  • Demonstrated decision-making ability in complex rail operations, including freight and tank car maintenance.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, and OneNote.
  • Strong analytical skills and sound judgment in high-volume, technical environments.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to influence and collaborate across functions.
  • High level of initiative, self-management, and organizational discipline.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, detail-oriented setting.
  • Commitment to customer service excellence—both internal and external.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of AAR and FRA regulations is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Salesforce preferred, particularly in operational or asset management contexts
  • Experience coordinating technical projects with multiple stakeholders strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with rail asset management systems and processes preferred.
