Summary

This position is responsible for expense management and the mechanical integrity of the Greenbrier-owned and managed fleet of railcars. Direct all phases of the mechanical operation of the fleet of rail cars with an overall goal of maintaining the fleet in good mechanical and physical condition and identifying anomalies and trends related to maintenance spending. The fleet is diversified, consisting of various car types and ages in the industry. Ensure complete coverage for the GMS platform of owned and managed railcars.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform the following essential duties satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned to address business needs and changing business practices.

 

Team Leadership & Management

  • Demonstrated ability to drive performance through KPIs, effectively measuring success and ensuring continuous improvement across key metrics.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team, while establishing and managing a network of shops to consistently meet or exceed Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
  • Proactively resolve roadblocks and manage escalations related to programs, lease returns, tank car qualifications, and assignments, ensuring timely and effective resolution.

Asset & Program Management

  • Optimize cross-functional collaboration to leverage available shop networks and ensure seamless program execution.
  • Coordinate Scope of Work (SOW) reviews with Shop leaders and ensure work aligns with regulatory, customer, and industry standards.
  • Oversee warranty repairs, ensuring compliance with regulations and customer requirements.

Mechanical & Regulatory Oversight

  • Review tank car specifications for compliance with customer and regulatory standards, coordinating modifications as needed.
  •  Lead mechanical reviews of new builds, ensuring regulatory adherence.
  • Stay current with industry regulations (AAR M-1002 C-III, Title 49 CFR) and ensure compliance across operations.
  • Represent the company at industry events to stay informed on trends and regulatory updates.

Shop Space Planning, Data, & Process Management

  • Lead optimization efforts across key performance areas — cost/budget, throughput, and quality. Develop and manage maintenance expense budgets, reduce cost per event, achieve throughput targets, minimize days in the shop, and ensure zero quality escapes.
  • Ensure the integrity of a high-quality national network that supports Greenbrier’s commitment to delivering exceptional customer experience. Conduct shop audits, scorecard assessments, and site inspections to ensure the successful delivery of key performance metrics related to cost, throughput, and quality.
  • Analyze ASM team efficiency, using data-driven insights to drive process improvements and track key metrics (e.g., Total Maintenance Spend, Tank Qualification Pipeline, Compliance Burn Rate, Out of Service, ASM Team Scorecard).
  • Manage the qualification process, ensuring compliance, optimal resource allocation, and cost management.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • 10+ years in rail operations, asset management, or mechanical operations, with a focus on railcar management. Expertise in manufacturing, repair, and compliance within the rail industry. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Leadership: Strong leadership and strategic thinking with proven decision-making ability in complex operations, including freight and tank car repairs and maintenance.
  • Technical Proficiency: Expertise in Microsoft Office, PowerBI, and Enspire billing systems, preferably.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of AAR M-1002 C-III, M-1003 Specifications, and Title 49 CFR.
